Welcome! I am Robin Deutschmann and I come from a long line of fabulous home cooks and bakers. From my great grandmother to my grandmother to my mom, these remarkable women have passed down three generations of home culinary knowledge. And I … became a photographer.
So much for carrying on the family traditions.
While my mom spent her life with a mixer in one hand, I held tightly onto a camera in mine. Passion and drive run deep in our family.
I do spend a lot of time in the kitchen. With a husband, five kids, a son-in-law and various other family members … this is a given. I strive to live up to the effortless, no fear attitudes of these fine women before me. You see, I LOVE to cook and bake. I especially love to chop and whisk. And I love to photograph my creations. That is my passion, after all.
And it hit me … maybe I should combine my passion with my culinary heritage.
And thus this blog Freshly Photographed is born
I am inspired by those who can take a variety of ingredients, put them together and transform them into something delicious. I watched my mother and grandmother do this flawlessly (and through stories I know my great grandmother did the same). They made it look easy … and magical.
So, I’m getting back to my culinary roots. I’m searching deep within for that cooking gene that had to have been passed on to me by the women in my family. And while I no longer have them here to direct me or explain how much a ‘pinch’ of something really is … I do have stories, handwritten recipes and an endless supply of loving memories in the kitchen to carry me through.
Follow your heart …
If I could leave my children with just one piece of advice, it would be … Follow your heart and love where it will lead you.
I have practiced this myself and it has led me along some very interesting pathways. One such path brought me into the life of a wonderfully creative man, who is now both my husband and business partner, Rod Deutschmann. It has also launched me into a career in photography that only in my wildest dreams I could have imagined possible.
I took the ultimate leap of faith a few years ago when I left the security of my job to build a business with my husband. This decision has made all the difference in the world.
In 2006, Rod and I co-founded the San Diego In Focus Learning Center (IFLC San Diego Photography Courses) and dedicated our lives to teaching people how to do more with their camera than just take a pretty picture ~ we teach them the art of manual photography and the freedom it allows for true expressionism. That’s a big statement I know … and I stand behind it completely.
